Worthing FC Women made a bit of club history on an unusually warm November Sunday afternoon against Sutton United and the mood post-match was one with a joyous theme for all associated with the Rebels.

Having never progressed to the second round proper of this competition, the motivation was there from the start to top off a positive domestic opening eight games in the league with a continuation of a run in the Womens FA Cup which had seen the West Sussex outfit knock out Leatherhead and Richmond Park in the two qualifying rounds prior to this tie.

With the two teams playing in the London & South East Regional Womens Division 1 South, withWorthingsecond and Sutton ninth, it was expected to be a tight and calculated contest in round one of the FA Womens Cup. But this wasnt the case as it only took the home side 20 minutes to breach the United defence at The Crucial Environmental Stadium.

Sophie Humphreys shot somehow trickled through the gloves of Amy Jenkins, whose off day started with this howler conceded at her near post. Defender Ellie Russell added a second for the home side 16 minutes after she rose the highest to cash in from a dangerous corner kick.

It wasnt just Jenkins who had an off day, though. The whole Sutton defence collapsed in both halves as it turned out to be a day to forget for the Us. Worthings top scorer in the league Rebecca Bell and player of the match contender Ella Newman got in on the act before the half-time whistle with the latter of the pair scoring twice in quick succession to make it five and game-over.

The dejected nature of the Sutton players was clear to see from that point on. Whether it was the negative body language given off or the one fan shouting, Sutton, come on, be better on the ball from the stands, the visitors were not going to inflict the same pain onJohn Donoghues ruthless team.

Having been applauded off at the interval, it was expected to be more of the same in the second half but with nothing to lose at 5-0 down, Sutton started to show some fight but to no avail. Top scorer Bell notched her second of the contest in the 77th minute and just like in the first half, the Yellows, who donned their green away kit on this occasion, collapsed once more.

Georgia Tibble, who notched the assist for Bells second, capitalised on yet another defensive mistake by the visitors - but this time from Gabby Howell - to eventually chip the helpless goalkeeper from range. With the clock ticking down, midfielder Tibble scored again with a well-worked corner eventually being arrowed home.

Shortly after, the full-time whistle went, leading to a great deal of applause and chanting.Donoghues Worthing outfit are now potentially 90 minutes away not only from making more history but also possibly drawing a big Womens Super League side like Arsenal or Chelsea. They and the 10 other WSL teams, however, enter the competition at the third round stage.

Next up though in the second round proper for Worthing is the challenge of third-tierFA Womens National League Southern Premier side, Milton Keynes Dons, who also netted eight goals in their first-round proper tie over the weekend. The winner of the clash, which could be played at Stadium MK, on Sunday, November 27, will receive a significant 8,000 prize. On the other hand, the loser at this stage would still receive an important 2,000 cheque for getting this far in this historic competition.
